Edward Phillips Oppenheim (22 October 1866 – 3 February 1946) was an English novelist, in his lifetime a major and successful writer of genre fiction including thrillers. Oppenheim's literary success enabled him to buy a villa in France and a yacht, then a house in Guernsey, though he lost access to this during the Second World War. Afterwards he regained the house, le Vanquiédor in St. Peter Port, and he died there on 3 February 1946. During the war he worked for the Ministry of Information.

E.P.Oppenheim is always a good observer of human behavior, and sometimes a great one. His description of facial muscles, pupils and eyebrows in sometimes uncanny. He obviously observed his fellows closely and "saw" these movements in his literary characters. The "hero" of this novel, however, is very unusual for several reasons. Oppenheim has almost perfectly described a high functioning autistic personality, almost 40 years before this condition was described in the medical literature. Tavernake is unmotional, unable to sympathize or even understand the most common social situations. He is diligent, precise, obsessive in his persuit of wealth, but oblivious to the feelings of the people around him. They simply don't matter.He meets Beatrice Burnay an American in London without any money. Odd, uncomfortable, almost autistic, He rescues from hunger and possible suicide, and in return she educates him on the possibilities of human emotion.
