In GamePlan for Getting Published, literary agent Maryann Karinch tells non-fiction authors how to present a book project to an agent and work with a commercial publisher. Karinch's title is one of the first books offered by GamePlan Press (www.gameplanpress.com), a new publisher specializing in succinct business and career books.
Karinch, who founded The Rudy Agency in 2004, describes a query letter and proposal in detail and provides samples of each. She also introduces the reader to the process of working with a publisher.
The book is concise, humorous, and includes references to other material that would be useful to a first-time author.
"I wanted GamePlan Press to offer this book at a price that any author could afford," notes Karinch. "Being an author myself, I realize that writng a book is rarely a get-rich-quick scheme!"
GamePlan for Getting Published has generous doses of insider information, some of which come from Karinch's own experience as a commercially published author. The book also gives step-by-step guidance on development of a strong promotion plan, which is now a required element of most proposals for works of non-fiction.

Want to be a published author of a non-fiction book? If you read only one book, this is it. Karinch is a highly respected agent and author. She knows this business. She discusses what it takes to have your query responded to favorably and gives examples of good and bad queries. This is followed by a detailed discussion and examples of the parts of the proposal, then the contract, and promotion. I have read a lot of books that cover the same topics in whole or in part. In my opinion this is the best. I felt Karinch was genuinely interested in me the reader being successful as an author. Most important this book is grounded in the reality that books are business. Ever watch Shark Tank where entrepreneurs try to gain support for their products? They see needs others may not see. As Karinch puts it, "write to fill a hole."
Concise, extremely informative, often humorous, a great investment for the non-fiction writer. Highly recommend.

GamePlan for Getting Published eBook Maryann Karinch Reviews
GamePlan for Getting Published is a soup-to-nuts guide that deconstructs successful queries, proposals, and marketing strategies to help writers become published book authors. I found the advice succinct and focused; I now understand some concrete steps I need to take even before I pitch my project. I am convinced my query will be stronger and my book proposal will have a better chance of engaging an editor's interest thanks to the tips contained in this book. Eve Turek
Excellent guide. Very clear, with some humor thrown in too. The instructions and sample proposal included complement one another well.
This book has been so incredibly helpful. Many authors make the grave mistake of laboring over their books but then rushing through their proposals. Karinch's text gives explicit guidelines as well as examples, which are worth their weight in gold. I wish I had found this book years ago!
I am a first time writer, trying to get my book (non-fiction) published, and Maryann Karinch has shown an interest in it. She also recommended me this book, and it has instructions on how to submit a query and proposal to an agent, any agent, and I strongly suggest that you follow them, because there is a lot to learn from it. Having queried many agents, I have received back rejections, and in submitting attachments, I though I was all set, but this book has shown me I wasn't.
Quite simply, it shows the do's and don't's of submitting your proposal after your query. Most agents want one attachment of the proposal including the Overview, the Market, how to promote, competitive analysis, the bio, and the contents. Each category is explained in how to go about in preparing it, until you have your entire package ready to send to your agent. At the end, it includes what an agent does for you, and what to expect when your manuscript is done.
My advice to those how are trying to publish (especially me) Follow directions!
